Serie A regains its financial strength

By Giovanni Gentile - The last Serie A campaign (2006-07) which saw Juventus' demotion to the second tier for match-fixing and Milan, Fiorentina, Lazio and Reggina having points deducted for their role in the scandal, has taken its financial toll.

In terms of income, the Serie A has been plunged in the 2006-07 season to the last place among the five most important European championships, with only the French Ligue 1 behind - reports the Corriere dello Sport, Italy's sport daily newspaper.

The Corriere dello Sport reports that according to preliminary figures released by accounting agency Deloitte, the English Premier League continues to top the list with the highest revenues (EUR 2.2 billion), followed way behind by the German Bundesliga and Spanish La Liga (EUR 1.39 billion each). The Serie A positioned now in the fourth position with turnover dropping from EUR 1.4 billion (2005-06) to only EUR 1.14 billion (2006-07). The French Ligue 1 is closing the top list with EUR 1 billion turnover.

Last season decline is attributed to the fall of attendance, when the Serie A lost over 1 million spectators (18,552 average while in 2005/2006 this number was of 21,394).

However, the return of Juventus and Napoli in the new season (2007-08) to the top-tier is expected to increase the league's total revenue with more than EUR 360 million, to a region of EUR 1.5 billion. At the moment this is only an estimated value that, probably, will be improved considering also the presence of Genoa and of the four derby clubs (Rome, Turin, Milan, Genoa) at the top-tier, after many years.

This will provide the Italian league with the chance to regain its second place behind the English Premier League, and over the Spanish, German and France leagues.
