EURO will add to European economy

Adjust font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
A MasterCard-commissioned study revealed that EURO 2008 should put EUR 1.4 million in the European economy.

The economic influence will come from a rise in ticket sales, travel, food and beverage sales, merchandising, sponsorship revenue, advertising and use of telecommunications and new media services.

The study predicted that each match played at the tournament could be worth an average of EUR 42 million, benefiting hosts Austria and Switzerland, and possibly give the continent's economy a boost as a whole.

A study by Professor Chadwick, the founder of the Birkbeck Sport Business Centre and Professor of Sport Business Strategy, said the best opening-draw matches for economic impact will be France vs. Italy in Zurich, the Netherlands vs. France, and Italy vs, the Netherlands, the latter two being in Bern. Chadwick said they could be worth more than a combined EUR 168 million to the European economy.

Potential matchups between Germany and Italy, or Germany and France, or even Germany and The Netherlands could be the biggest for economic impact.

Chadwick said the biggest revenue stream would come from sponsorship and commercial revenues.
