English Premier League clubs spent almost twice as much this year as they did any past January transfer window.
The total spent was approximately GBP 150 million, according to analysis by Deloitte, surpassing once again all the other major European leagues.
Paul Rawnsley, Director in the Sports Business Group at Deloitte, said he was not surprised at the figure, with the record TV contracts starting to sift into the clubs' coffers.
The figure was more than GBP 90 million compared to last season, GBP 80 million more than 2006 and more than GBP 100 million more than 2003 through 2005.
Chelsea was responsible for GBP 27 million — with GBP 15 million for Nicolas Anelka — while Tottenham Hotspur added GBP 20 million.
The top seven clubs spent nearly half the GBP 150 million that the league invested in players.
