England again has best finances of European football

In the annual Deloitte report on football finance, the company again dubbed the English Premier League the richest in the world and, it said, the league will only be stronger financially next year.

Operating profits are expected to double to GBP 260 million for the 2007-2008 season. The survey estimates the total wage bill for the league will be more than GBP 1 billion, with GBP 300 million being the minimum spent on transfers.

"We believe the relatively small changes in Premier League clubs' financial results over the past three seasons represent the calm before the storm," said Dan Jones, partner in the Sports Business Group at Deloitte. "The new broadcasting rights deals – providing an additional GBP 300 million or so of revenue to the Premier League clubs in 2007-08, and other revenue increases, will drive overall turnover up to almost GBP 1.8 billion."

The report also finds that English football is responsible for about 25 percent of the GBP 8.7 billion generated by European football in 2006. Premier League revenue of GBP 1.4 billion topped Serie A at GBP 1 billion, Germany and Spain's GBP 800 million, and France's GBP 600 billion.

While the English second-tier Championship clubs saw turnover grow four percent to GBP 318 million in the year ending 2006, there are financial warning signs below the top two flights.

Still, England has the strongest football economy top tier to bottom.

"English clubs will continue to lead the world financially," said Alan Switzer, director in the Sports Business Group at Deloitte. "Whilst the players will be the main financial beneficiaries from the new TV deals, English clubs will continue to invest in their stadia and youth facilities, which is a vital element of a successful business strategy.

"Over 15 per cent of revenue generated by Premier League clubs since 1992/93 - over £1.7 billion - has been invested in facilities; the 'shop window' for the game. The contrast to facilities in countries like Italy is now stark."
