City officials have to move quickly to win the race to house the franchise that was recently acquired by the SportsWest group, and are actively looking to purchase a suitable site to build a football (soccer) specific stadium. Media reports suggest that the council members are proposing to buy the site with public money, most likely through the Redevelopment Agency, and then let SportsWest have the land where it could build the stadium in partnership with the private sector. The club is scheduled to join the league in time for the start of the 2006 season as part of the MLS expansion programme.
