UEFA president Michel Platini is feared to be devising plans that will give him more control over the way international football is run.
The Premier League is at odds with Platini on the issue, and the debate was further heated when it was revealed that UEFA presented a draft document to the French government, which outlined proposed future regulations on the game.
UEFA hopes that the changes will be put into effect with the support of the European Union and the French presidency.
According to the Premier League, these new directives will include strict national player quotas, restrictions on transfers, and tight regulations on club ownership and financing.
The League believes that this is an attempt by Platini to impose limitations on prosperous English clubs. They also claim that these changes may affect more sports than football alone.
The Premier League is inducting Prime Minister Gordon Brown to persuade the French in their favor.
Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore stated, "UEFA's submission to the French presidency of the EU can only be seen as a direct challenge to the current model, seeking to take powers from both FIFA and the national associations. The Premier League and the EPFL [European Professional Football Leagues] cannot and will not support this move."
