Belgium and the Netherlands mulling joint league

Adjust font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
The Netherlands and Belgium are reviewing the possibility of a new united league known as the BeNe Liga, a group that would feature the best clubs of each nation.

Dutch clubs PSV Eindhoven, Ajax and Feyenoord, and Belgium Anderlecht, Brugge and Standard Liege have been mentioned as possible participants.

With a 13-year gap since a Dutch club won a major European tournament, and a much longer drought for Belgium, it made sense. It also continues the area's ties, as the Netherlands and Belgium are jointly pursuing a joint 2018 World Cup bid with Luxembourg.

Belgian Alan Courtois is credited with the plan. It received an increase in support when, he said, UEFA president Michel Platini through is backing to the idea.

It would not be the first boundary overlap either. Scottish Ranger and Celtic have tried to join the English premier League before.

The United States and Mexico formed a North American SuperLiga last season. Denmark, Sweden and Norway have competed in the Royal League since 2004. But the latest Royal League was postponed for financial concerns. And the Atlantic League was proposed in 2002, a competition that would have featured the Netherlands, Belgium, Scotland and Portugal. But a new UEFA Cup scotched that plan.
