Ferencvaros relegated from Hungary's top league

A Hungarian Football Federation board has said Ferencvaros, winner of 28 Hungarian league titles, has been excluded from the upcoming championship.

The federation's licensing board appeals committee did not give any reasons behind the decision but promised to provide more details. Ferencvaros was punished for failing to meet the financial requirements of the top division. The club also owes money to its former managers and coaches.

Club officials will appeal the ruling in court and with UEFA.

If the appeals fail, Ferencvaros could compete this season in Hungary's second division. Vasas, which was relegated after last season, would move to the top league.

Ferencvaros has been facing financial difficulties despite good on-field performances.

The club last won the Hungarian league title in 2004 and has spent 103 consecutive seasons in the first division. Ferencvaros finished sixth in the 2005-2006 league standings, 27 points behind champions Debrecen VSC.

The club's troubles deepened over the past few years, as the Hungarian government forced all clubs to begin operating as businesses.

According to local reports, the club's debts to players and coaches, as well as unpaid taxes and state loans, total about EUR 4.4 million.
