Apparently a Norwegian official doesn't believe Scandinavia will stage its Royal League this year, while a Swedish official believes the tournament still has hope.
The league is a tournament – started in 2004 – for top competition among clubs from Denmark, Norway and Sweden. But TV viewership has been mild, and a new TV contract has not been hammered out.
A Norwegian official said he "regretted that there will not be a competition this winter", while a Swedish official said he felt the league still was going to go ahead.
"It is a shame that the tournament can't continue due to a lack of commercial interest," said Ernst Ravnaas, the chairman of the Norsk Toppfotball and a board member of the Royal League. "It was not possible to get together a financial plan which was good enough to guarantee to clubs enough money and then we feel that we have to stop."
Tommy Teorin, the general secretary of the Swedish Elite Football organisation, has not yielded.
"We have been given a bid that we know that the clubs in Sweden and Denmark accept," Teorin said. "Before the announcement in Norway there was a bid to consider and hopefully that is still there. We won't stop negotiating with the different partners."
