FA chairman Lord Triesman and chief executive Brian Barwick have told Premier League chief Richard Scudamore that the 39th match idea probably won't work.
Triesman wants Scudamore to develop an amended plan based on Triesman's four principles. The first is the English bid for the 2018 World Cup cannot be negatively impacted. The second is that relationships with other governing bodies cannot be harmed.
Also, the matches have to be equitable, not forcing a club battling relegation to go up against a championship contender in the extra match. That also falls under not alienating the fans and keeping the integrity of the game in good standing.
