The 23 World Cup referees have been warned by FIFA president Sepp Blatter that, if any fail to meet high standards, they will be removed from tournament action.
“We have enough referees so if one does not behave really well there are replacements available,” Blatter said. ‘They can make an error but not an error about the protection of the players - they will be immediately sent to another level because we have to ensure the referees are focused.”
The referees will have a list of the eight worst offences to monitor, including diving, elbowing, over-the-top tackles, mass dissent and time-wasting.
Blatter also made it clear that he expects the officials to perform well on and off the pitch.
“There will be instructions to all the referees, linesmen, players, coaches and official delegations in the World Cup,” Blatter said. “They will have to sign a paper saying that they will never, themselves or their families, be involved in betting on the World Cup.”
