Swiss OK extra security funding for UEFA EURO

The Swiss government has approved an additional EUR 6.7 million for security costs for the UEFA EURO 2008, held in Switzerland and Austria.

The vote by the Council of States, the second parliament house in Switzerland, means it has followed the other chamber, the National Council, in supporting the additional payment.

The Swiss Confederation will support the tournament time with a maximum overall amount of EUR 52.8 million.

"We are extremely pleased at this decision," said Martin Kallen, Chief Operating Officer of championship organisers Euro 2008 SA.

The extra funds are earmarked for security-related matters in the four Swiss host cities of Basle, Berne, Geneva and Zurich, which will be staging UEFA EURO 2008™ matches between 7 and 29 June 2008. In addition to the outlay for security, the overall amount designated by Swiss authorities also covers promotion and events, transport and traffic-related matters, and stadium-related costs.

The St. Jakob-Park in Basle will be the setting for the opening game on 7 June 2008. Switzerland's other venues are the Stade de Suisse Wankdorf (Berne), the Stade de Genève ( Geneva) and the Letzigrund Stadion (Zurich).
