MLS adds another international roster spot for clubs

Adjust font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
The MLS keeps adding foreign influence, trying to build up its stature as a world-wide league.

The league announced it would add an additional spot for foreign players for each club. The spots can be traded, meaning a club could conceivably end up with a roster of all non-U.S. players.

Clubs were limited to four "senior" international players and three "youth" internationals. There no longer will be a difference between senior and youth. There now can just be eight international players on a club roster.

Foreigners without nonresident alien status can now account for 112 of the league's 392 players.

But with the league reviewing expansion, adding San Jose, Seattle and likely one other club, an expanded talent pool is helpful.

"We believe we need to dip into the international market in the short term," deputy commissioner Ivan Gazidis told the AP. "Americans are and will be the backbone of league. But I don't think I'm saying anything controversial when I say we don't believe the domestic talent pool is limitless.

"Every expansion is going to dilute talent, and that's not desirable for anybody."
