The Professional Football League (LFP) has rejected a proposal to modify the number of foreigners allowed to play in domestic football and asked the Sports Council (CSD) to resolve the matter in the face of opposition from the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and the Association of Footballers (AFE).
The proposal that was rejected put forward a plan to have three foreigners in each team and an “assimilated” footballer, meaning a player from abroad that has been at a club for over five years or over ten years at different Spanish clubs. “The body that that has to decide is the CSD”, General League Secretary Carlos del Campo said following an Extraordinary General Assembly. “The law is clear. If there is no agreement between the parties, the council decides. The League has communicated to the council that the proposal has not been accepted by all three parties and that now the council must decide whether how many foreign players in each side in the Primera and the Segunda is acceptable.” Campo expects an agreement to be reached by November.
