Lega Calcio want to shrink leagues size

Adjust font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
The head of Lega Calcio said Italian football should cut the number of clubs in Serie A and Serie B.

Antonio Matarrese wants the top tier Serie A trimmed from 20 to 18 clubs, with second division Serie B to cut from 22 to 20 teams.

Matarrese said he wanted to make sure clubs could hold up in this financial climate, especially with declining attendance.

"It seems to me important that we start reasoning over a real and proper reform of football. We don't have a choice," Matarrese said at a news conference. "We can argue for months on the division of resources. The truth is there are too many of us."
