The cross-border Setanta Cup will be extended to eight clubs after six took part in the inaugural tournament this season. The numbers have been increased by extending invitations to the winners of the eircom League Cup in the Republic of Ireland and the CIS Cup in Northern Ireland. This year the tournament was restricted to the respective league winners, runners-up and national cup holders of each association. No announcement was made in relation to whether the prize money on offer would remain the same or be increased. Linfield earned €150,000 for winning this year’s tournament from a prize fund of €350,000. However, the distribution of prize money will be less equitable from now on. This year all teams were guaranteed €30,000 just for being in the competition. Next season payments will be awarded on a performance related basis and scaled from first to last.
