Messina back to Serie A, Genoa and Torino are demoted

An Italian appeals court overturned a decision taken by the Football Federation (FIGC) to eliminate Messina from the top flight due to the poor state of its finances. The appeals court however, dismissed seven-time Italian champions Torino’s appeal. Perugia and Salernitana will be barred from Serie B under the FIGC decision. Genoa has been demoted from Serie A to the Serie C1 (third-tier) after the Italian Football League disciplinary commission found evidence of match fixing. The club was investigated over €250,000 payment to their opponents Venezia before the final Serie B game of the season on 11 June. Genoa’s 3-2 win over Venezia secured the club’s promotion.
