RFU mulls new autumn - summer league

Adjust font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

Members of the Russian Football Union general meeting asked the RFU executive committee to discuss possibility of switching the league calendar to autumn-summer from the existing format of spring-autumn.

Currently the Russian Primera Liga starts in March and ends in November. Due to the differences in calendar with the main European leagues Russian teams are handicapped in late stages of European clubs' competitions. Though lots of Russian clubs play on artificial pitches it would be hard to play in winter in Russia due to harsh weather conditions. In the past several European ties were switched abroad from Russia because of a frosty weather. Meanwhile, the RFU decided to continue to play two-legged matches in the Russian Cup up until its final.
