The Royal League, in which the top four teams from Norway, Sweden and Denmark take part, is proving a success as financial results have been positive. The new championship is actually more popular than the UEFA Champions League after comparing the viewing figures from eight Champions games on TV3 and nine Royal League games on TV Norge. The latter achieved an average of 261,000 compared to TV3’s 213,000. More people are able to tune in to TV Norge than TV3 and that partly explains why the figures for the Royal League, in its first season, have been so high. But former Tottenham goalkeeper Erik Thorstvedt, who is working for TV Norge, is not surprised, he said: "The somewhat negative focus before the tournament, when the players wondered whether it was worth it, has gone away and now I can see players from our Tippeliga saying that the goal of the season is to at least qualify for the Royal League. I think when people see the final on 26 May and that one team will be able to be crowned Scandinavian champions then I think it will become even more interesting for the fans."
