Robert Hoyzer, the German referee at the centre of allegations of match-fixing in several Bundesliga games, has been arrested and threatened with a long jail sentence, with prosecutors saying they had fresh evidence he may have been involved in match-fixing before 2004. Hoyzer admitted receiving €67,000 in bribes from a Croatian betting ring for rigging or attempting to rig seven second division, third division and German Cup matches. "As a referee I was only earning about 3,000 euros per month - suddenly it was tens of thousands. The gambling mafia spied on me on the internet and caught me at my weakest point." The Berlin prosecutors are investigating additional 25 people on suspicion of fraud, including four referees and 14 players, and already arrested three Croatians from Berlin. The German Football Association (DFB) which has set up a special commission to investigate the allegations has been banned by the prosecutors from involvement in the investigation.
