Qatar plans to bid for 2018 World Cup hosting

Qatar is planning to place a bid to host the football World Cup in 2018 after a rejected bid for the 2016 Olympics.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has not responded well to Qatar, particularly at last week's meeting in Athens. Doha was denied a place on the short-list, even after the IOC evaluated their technical value positively. This small country, located on the Arabian Gulf, will focus its efforts to host the lucrative World Cup tournament.

Over the next couple of weeks they could be announcing their bid. Qatar is seriously adamant about hosting a major event, and has already made plans to build stadiums and hotels to accommodate such an event.

Qatar has hosted the 2006 Asian Games and is already set to host the Asian Cup in 2011.

The country has plentiful gas and oil resources, which adds to their financial power. Some say this is why the IOC declined their bid. IOC president Jacques Rogge claims that it had to do with the dates proposed.
