Portuguese Porto chairman Pinto da Costa feels the club will maintain its spot in the Champions League next season despite UEFA exiling it after a bribery scandal.
The club plans on appealing the UEFA decision, which came after the club was found guilty of trying to bribe referees during the 2003-2004 season. UEFA enacted more stringent bylaws for clubs after Italian Milan participated following its involvement in the big Italian bribery scandal.
The chairman told Portuguese broadcaster SIC that the club was expecting UEFA's decision and was not caught off guard.
"We do not consider ourselves out of the Champions League," da Costa said. "We are already working on the appeal, both in Portugal and Switzerland. We are convinced that we will compete in the Champions League next season. We are sure about it."
