Cardiff City heading west for pre-season

Welsh Cardiff City revealed the final details of an ambitious pre-season tour that will take the club westward.

On July 12, manager Dave Jones and his team go to Vancouver, Canada where they will play a series of matches. Cardiff City starts against Victoria United of the Pacific Coast Soccer League, in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, a 30-mile ferry ride from the city of Vancouver itself. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. local time.

The clubs then heads south to the United States for a July 18 match at the 72,000-capacity Qwest Field, home of the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League. The opposition for the 7 p.m. local time match is the Seattle Sounders, the current champions of the United Soccer League's First Division.

Cardiff City returns to Canada for the Vancouver Whitecaps Inaugural Nations Cup. The club will meet the China U20 side on July 21, with the Whitecaps and the Indian national teams rounding out the field in the four-team tournament. The final and third-place game will be played on July 23.

Jones hopes the trip will produce the sort of tough pre-season preparation Sunderland had on a similar trip last season.

“It’s vital for any club to have a decent pre-season tour and the opposition has to be tough and worthwhile,” Jones said. “That is exactly what this trip is all about. Sunderland went over there last year and had a real tough time of it, losing to the Whitecaps.”

Cardiff are still in negotiations to line-up opponents for what will be their only home pre-season friendly on Saturday, July 29.

One week later they kick off their league season, likely to be at home since the Community Shield match between Chelsea and Liverpool will be held at the Millennium Stadium the following week on August 13.

Next season's fixtures are due to be released by the Football League on June 22.
