Madrid, Hamburg get UEFA finals

The home stadiums of Spanish Real Madrid and German Hamburg SV will host the 2010 Champions League final and 2010 Champions Cup final, respectively.

The Super Cups from 2009 through 2011 still will be held at Stade Louis II in Monaco.

With UEFA dealing with some confusion over tax issues in England, Wembley was bypassed for the Champions League final. The stadium still could be up for the 2011 events. UEFA has delayed awarding those bids.

UEFA did not feel it received adequate assurances that players would not be taxed if the event were at Wembley. UEFA president Michel Platini said outright that the reason was due to taxation issues.

A British Treasury spokesman told the BBC that there were no changes to tax rules, and that there appeared to be a misunderstanding with UEFA. William Gaillaird, an official with UEFA, said he wanted to clear up any misconceptions on taxation before awarding the 2011 sites.

Platini said the English FA downplayed the tax issue, but he never received confirmation from the British government. Germany gave the governing body assurances of no extra taxation, while that is not an issue in Spain.

A UEFA release said the stadiums were chosen due to seating and security. Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabéu seats 71,569 and has hosted three previous Champions Clubs' Cup finals.

This year's final will be held at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow. Rome's Stadio Olimpico will host the 2009 match. England last hosted the Champions League final in 2003 at Old Trafford.
