English Southampton could have former chairman Rupert Lowe back on its board after he received the proxy support of Michael Wilde, the club's leading shareholder.
Lowe, who spent nearly a decade in the chair until a 2006 ouster, and Wilde now control 46 percent of the club's shares. They have given Southampton a 31 March deadline on whether to accept a takeover proposal.
Even without the acceptance, Lowe and Wilde can call an extraordinary general meeting. They likely would emerge with the club from that meeting.
Current chairman Leon Crouch, who helped Wilde topple Lowe, called the approach unwelcome.
The club saw extremes under Lowe. Southampton reached the 2003 FA Cup final and moved to a new stadium. They also were relegated from the Premier League in 2005.
The club now is fighting a fall to League One.
