O'Neill sold Celtic shares to O'Brien

Former Scottish Celtic manager Martin O'Neill has sold his shares to millionaire Denis O'Brien.

O'Neill, who is now at English Premier League club Aston Villa, severed his ties to his old club when he sold 1.6 million shares last Friday for more than GBP 500,000.

An announcement by the Stock Exchange confirmed O'Neill's sale. The exchange also announced Telstar Holdings, a company owned by O'Brien, acquired 1.6 million shares in Celtic, bringing the businessman's shareholding in the club to 2.4 million preferred ordinary shares, representing 13.32 per cent of that class of shares in the club.

O'Brien also owns 500,000 ordinary shares in Celtic.

O'Neill, who participated in Celtic's 2001 share issue, earned about GBP 512,000 before tax, based on Friday's share price of 32p.

He had suggested in 2004 that he might forego a GBP 230,000 dividend on shares he held at the time so money could be reinvested in the club, which was at the time GBP 17 million in debt.

O'Neill departed Celtic after five seasons following the 2004-2005 season. He was appointed manager of Aston Villa last August after being out of football for 15 months.
