The president of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) reiterated his stance that some foreign investment is good for the game, but he does not want Italy overrun with foreign club owners.
Giancarlo Abete lauded the family ownership of Italian football clubs at a news conference 23 April detailing the league's efforts to work with the Red Cross. Among the family owners Abete mentioned were the Sensi family, owners of Roma.
But with Roma on the market and the Sensis looking at a possible deal with foreign owners, Abete repeated remarks that he does not mind a little foreign investment. Just not too much, such as is viewed with English clubs.
"Foreign investors are welcome," Abete said. "The Sensi family has given and is still giving much to the city of Rome and Roma the club, and the family itself will have to decide what is best for its future.
"The arrival of foreign capital is welcome, though we shouldn't forget about the important contribution of the Sensi family to the club.I don't want to discuss and club or entrepreneur in particular, but I wouldn't like 15 out of 20 of our clubs to be owned by foreign investors."
