Capitalia, Italy’s fourth largest bank, find itself now the majority shareholder of the Seria A club Lazio. The bank owns 28% of the club after potential investors failed to subscribe to a € 190m rights issue. The bank’s stake is worth around € 5.5m on the Milan Borsa. The bank has refused to lose his majority position and sell shears to businessman Claudio Lotito which was set to but 50% of holdings for € 43m. Club’s chairman Ugo Longo insists that the club is making significant progress in improving its financial situation and that the financial guarantee required securing a Seria A license, will be placed shortly. Some of the club’s debts were cleared lately after the transfer of two players to Spanish Primera Liga Valencia in a € 16.5m deal. The Spanish club deducted an outstanding € 13.5m debt of Lazio from the transfer of the player Gaizka Mendieta three years ago.
