Thaksin Shinawatra targets Manchester City

Once again, a foreign investor is interested in the English Premier League, but this would-be takeover could be launched from the East as opposed to the West.

Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, deposed in a bloodless coup last year, is considering a bid for Manchester City, with the total attempt estimated at GBP 92 million.

A Thaksin website reported the deal was underway, with the former prime minister gathering partners for the deal in China and the Middle East.

Thaksin's lawyer, Noppadol Pattama, heard the reports, but refused comment. He said Thaksin is on vacation and unavilable.

Hi-Thaksin.net claimed that Mohammed al-Fayed, the Egyptian billionaire owner of Harrods department store, and the Fulham Football Club, was involved in the negotiations on behalf of Thaksin.

It would be the second attempt by Thaksin to gain a foothold in a Premier League club. In 2004, he went after a 30-percent stake in Liverpool. Thaksin also was interested in other clubs.
