San Jose Earthquakes make a comeback

MLS San Jose Earthquakes have been reborn.

The club will be back in the San Francisco area for the 2008 season. Lew Wolff and John Fisher, owners of Major League Baseball's Oakland Athletics, have brought back the latest incarnation of the Earthquakes, after a club with the same name moved to Houston and became the Dynamo in 2006.

"This is a momentous day in the maturation of MLS," said league commissioner Don Garber said. "One, because we are able to reward the soccer fans in the Bay Area for their patience and complete our commitment to return a team to them. Two, because it shows how much the sport's credibility has grown in just two years time."

The club will play at a temporary home for two seasons while a new stadium is built, pending approval from the San Jose City Council.

"We join MLS at a very exciting juncture in the league's - and the sport's - history in the United States," Wolff said. "With the development of new soccer-specific stadiums, expanded national television exposure and increased fan and corporate sponsor support, coupled with this area's cultural diversity and long-standing interest in soccer, we expect a very bright future for this team."
