Former English Newcastle United chairman Freddy Shepherd said he was going to do a deal with a new club, but declined to reveal the identity of it, except to say it was "northern".

Shepherd was run out of Newcastle United earlier this year when Mike Ashley took control of the club.

Since then, Shepherd has hinted that he has been presented with several takeover opportunities, his buyout money from Newcastle United been a nice target for clubs interested in investment.

He's had difficulty shaking his urge to stay with the game.

"Football's a drug, and a powerful drug," Shepherd told the Guardian. "From January, I think something could happen. I'm a northern guy, so obviously I'm more interested in northern clubs."

One of the reported clubs of interest is Leeds. Derby County also is up for grabs, with the club courting various investment groups. Bolton is believed to be interested in inviting a takeover.

And count Shepherd as among those that believe Ashley might not stay long at Newcastle United.

"Mike's a trader and a very successful one," Shepherd said. "I wouldn't be surprised whatever he did."
