Supporters of Russian second-division club Alania Vladikavkaz have protested the club’s liquidation by Russian tax authorities. A lawyer from the Notheren Ossetia Republic is demanding that the club be disbanded because of financial and legal irregularities.
The region’s public prosecutor launched an investigation into the club as part of a larger investigation into financial impropriety by the North Caucasian Republic. The move was part of a larger inquiry launched after the tragic siege by gunmen of an elementary school in the Republic. The club is involved because regional authorities have financed it since May 2004 as a shareholders society. However, investigators have uncovered irregularities such as the absence of shares and a charter fund. A hearing was to take place on Feb. 22. Alania won the Russian Premiere League in 1995 but were relegated last year.
