Hong Kong bidder emerges at Birmingham City

Hong Kong businessman Carson Yeung is the Far East businessman who has shown an interest in English Birmingham City. So strong is his interest, that he is planning a GBP 49.8 million bid.

Yeung was part owner of the Macau casino Greek Mythology, according to a Hong Kong newspaper. The Birmingham City bid could be Yeung's third attempt to buy an English club.

Indian-born billionaire Lakshmi Mittal also was interested in Birmingham City.

If Yeung made the deal, Birmingham City would join a large list of English clubs that have been bought out by foreign interests over the past couple of years.

Aston Villa was bought by U.S. billionaire Randy Lerner last year. Last season, Liverpool and West Ham United were bought by overseas investors. Malcolm Glazer had his controversial purchase of Manchester United, and Russian Roman Abramovich executed a takeover at Chelsea.

Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who fled the country after a bloodless coup, still is trying to buy Manchester City despite having his assets in Thailand frozen.
