The Major League Soccer club owners, Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG), is to receive an estimated US$ 20m after selling the operating rights to the club's president and CEO Kevin Payne, and businessmen Willi Lauterbach and Tim Kissler.

AEG also owns Major League Soccer franchises in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Jose. Scott Blackmun, AEG Chief Executive Officer said that a decision regarding the future of the San Jose Earthquakes will be made in the next month. AEG may not sell the Earthquakes as previously expected and either keep the team in San Jose or move them. AEG is negotiating with cities and investors outside of San Jose as no local ownership group has been interested.
