English Chesterfield's chairman, Barrie Hubbard, said the club is in "advanced talks" with potential investors for a takeover bid.
Roy McFarland was Chesterfield's manager until several days ago and was let go because the club was triumphant in only one match out of the last 10.
The club could follow in the footsteps of English Coca-Cola Championship sides Coventry, Leicester and Sheffield, in seeking sizeable outside investment.
A consortium also bought English Millwall earlier this month.
"We are in advanced talks with one interested party with a view to moving the club forward with ambitions for Championship football," said Hubbard.
"I have supported Chesterfield all my life and am as keen as anyone to lift this football club to make it a real asset for the town.
"All we are doing is a clear sign of our ambition and we really hope our efforts will be successful."
