New group to take over D.C. United

A consortium headed by Discovery Channel founder John Hendricks and former Duke University basketball player Brian Davis will buy the operating rights to MLS four-time champs D.C. United from Anschutz Entertainment Group.

Hendricks, who ran the Washington Freedom of the women's WUSA league, and Davis, who is looking into buying the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies, have gone into the group put together by team president Kevin Payne.

No formal announcement of the sale had yet been made.

D.C. United issued a news release Friday saying Payne, MLS commissioner Don Garber and Mayor Adrian M. Fenty would attend a press conference Monday "to announce the club's new ownership group."

MLS clubs are all owned by the league but operated individually.
