United States billionaire Randy Lerner is primed to make a formal offer to English Aston Villa club chairman Doug Ellis.
Lerner is working in close contact with Martin O'Neill, installed as the club's new manager Friday.
It appeared the deal had fallen through 10 days ago, with Lerner flying back to the United States after the apparent collapse of negotiations with Ellis. But Lerner, who owns the NFL Cleveland Browns, reconsidered and decided to negotiate without using Ellis.
O'Neill seemed to be Lerner's favourite for manager, and his installation seems to point to Lerner as the club's next owner. O'Neill will spend the next week assessing the current players at his disposal during Aston Villa's two matches in Holland on their pre-season tour.
Things must move fast, as the Premier League opener against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium is only 13 days away. Aston Villa has not brought in any players over the summer after avoiding relegation last season.
