Promoter looking at takeover of Sheffield

Adjust font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
English Sheffield is ripe for a buyout, and a consortium led by Dennis Hobson revealed it is ready to make a move for the club.

Hobson, a promoter for Ricky Hatton, is eager to revive the club and intends to buy out chairman David Allen after previously seeing an investment bid rejected.

"Me and my brother (Andrew) offered to put in GBP 500,000 each to join the board a couple of years ago when the club appealed for new investors," Hobson said. "We were turned down so we'll probably have to buy Allen out. I can't say how much we would put in, but we're going to make an approach."

The club is approximately GBP 30 million in debt, and Hobson said his group of Sheffield and Jersey-based businessmen have the finances to right the club.

Hobson said he wants former manager Ron Atkinson, along with fan favourite Chris Waddle involved in the club if his takeover is successful.

"There is a group of businessmen, including my brother Andrew, who share a love of Wednesday and who are prepared to invest to make the club great again," Hobson said. "It's clear the club are not firing on all cylinders and are going nowhere."
