Right after saying they would not up the ante to get rid of Tom Hicks and take over English Liverpool, Dubai International Capital (DIC) did just that.
In a bid to take over the club, it now appears Hicks and co-owner George Gillett could walk away with a profit from somewhere between GBP 40 to 80 million as opposed to the GBP 25 million they would have taken in from the previous offer.
DIC promised this would be the last raise. Hicks still is holding out, wanting to maintain control of the club. He would welcome DIC as a minority owner.
Hicks is expected in London early next week to discuss the future of Liverpool with DIC.
There are various options, with Gillett buying out Hicks and then selling out to DIC. DIC buying out both. Likely it will not end with an even partnership between Hicks and DIC. A fans group also has been trying to fund a grassroots takeover, but they have not been able to raise the cash that DIC can flick out there.
Liverpool fans just want Gillett and Hicks — particularly Hicks — out of there. A fan supporters group is planning a series of protests against Gillett and Hicks.
"We can only urge Tom Hicks and George Gillett to take the DIC offer and leave," Spokesman Neil Atkinson today told the Liverpool Echo.
