Sheffield Wednesday takeover on hold

Adjust font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
That English Sheffield Wednesday takeover has been denied by the club, but would-be owner Geoff Sheard will pursue a deal.

The club told the Stock Exchange that, despite reports of a Sheard takeover, it had not had "any offer proposal from any party that is sufficiently clear or developed."

The club shot back that former directors Dave Allen, Keith Addy and Geoff Hulley have not agreed yet to sell their shares. Sheffield Wednesday said it still was after talks with potential investors.

Sheard and his consortium of Germans and Swiss were all ready to take control of the club with a GBP 40 million takeover. This seems to leave open possibilities for another group — the UK-based Jon Sotnick consortium.

Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, a Canadian group rumoured to be looking into various clubs, also could enter the picture.
