Chicago Fire attract interest from former player

Adjust font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
The MLS Chicago Fire have attracted the interest of at least two potential buyers, with one group having close connections to the club.

Ex-Fire player Frank Klopas and former Fire marketing director Steve Pastorino are part of one group of local businessmen trying to but the club. Player agent and TV commentator Shep Messing said the other group is well known, though little has been revealed about the latter group.

Klopas' group will meet next week. Klopas wants to move quickly, hoping not to be too late with another group showing interest. He said if his group purchased the club, he would act as general manager.

There is some concern that Kloopas' group won't be able to match the bid from the more secretive group.

The Anschutz group – owner of the Fire – once owned six teams, but now owns the Fire, the L.A. Galaxy and the Houston Dynamo. There are 13 teams in the league and 10 separate owners. MLS Commissioner Don Garber has said he would like every team to have its own owner.
