Businessman Marcus Evans has agreed a GBP 44 million deal to takeover English Ipswich Town. The deal is conditional upon the completion of due diligence. Evans will pay GBP 32 million of debt and will invest additional GBP 12 million into the Championship club.
"Marcus Evans' investment is potentially great news for Ipswich Town," chairman David Sheepshanks told the club's official website. "The board have been in discussion with Marcus Evans for some time. "We are pleased now to be able to make this announcement about the deal, that when completed, will enable further investment in Jim Magilton's team building and our quest to bring Premiership football back to Portman Road."
Evans insists that the club's potential attracted him.
"I believe that Ipswich has great potential to build on its rich footballing heritage," Evans told the BBC. "The club has an excellent reputation, both off the pitch and on it. "The board has done a good job under difficult conditions under the stewardship of David Sheepshanks, who will continue in his role as chairman."
Evans' company, the Marcus Evans Group, includes a business events division which promotes more than 2,000 conferences and exhibitions in 32 countries. The roots of Evans' success lie in the corporate hospitality sector and the group offers regular football packages at the Premiership club Fulham and Barcelona in Spain's La Liga. The group's programme also includes the forthcoming Euro 2008 championship, next year's Champions League final and the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Evans' company is said to employ more than 3,500 people in 61 countries.
