Blatter up in arms over proposed EU reforms

FIFA president Sepp Blatter is now warning the European Union that there will be trouble if the EU tries to implement its sport reforms in the 27 nations it covers.

The EU is looking at new laws on the way sports are governed throughout the continent. The first draft has not set well with FIFA or UEFA, with critiques aimed at it being too vague on money for television rights, the development of younger players and the rules possibly creating more court cases.

"We do not want war," said Blatter. "The European politicians should leave sport in peace. We cannot allow a political, however strong, to undermine the basis of sport. I ring this alarm bell because it is an imminent problem... there is direct intervention on how sport is run."

Sport was given a special exemption from EU rules under the 2000 Nice Treaty. But that status was not made legally binding. That has led to more court cases over the years.
