Players union reaches goals with training program

The Scottish players union (SPFA) felt its GOALS project was a huge success in mentoring players in finding new clubs and alternate employment.

Part of the day for the 23 players was set aside for football training sessions. But training extended off the pitch, as there was IT training, SFA coach education, specific career advice, interview and CV workshops and access to career opportunities.

Warren Hawke, SPFA Project Manager, was extremely satisfied with the result of the GOALS Project.

"There was a lot of appreciation for and interest in the SPFA's project,: Hawke said.

The end game thus far has four players remaining full-time professionals, 13 players – four of whom are juniors – became part-time professionals, one player was given a scholarship in the United States, one player emigrated and only four players had no outcome from the project.

"Apart from the direct result, an awareness was created among all the participants of the need to plan long-term," says Hawke. "A positive attitude towards learning also arose spontaneously. We will certainly be repeating this project in future."
