Platini calls on G14 to disband

The G14 is pondering expansion, while UEFA president Michel Platini believes the group of 18 elite clubs should consider contraction.

Platini called for the G14 to disband and drop its lawsuits claiming compensation for players injured on international duty.

Platini suggested a grievance system through the Professional Football Strategy Council (PFSC) as a way to resolve disputes. Platini asked for an end to the quarreling among the various football factions.

"I call officially on the major and important clubs in European football to disband their elitist grouping, to withdraw the various lawsuits that they have brought before the courts...", Platini said in his closing speech to UEFA delegates.

"Presidents and heads of the major clubs, let us profit from your great experience and your ideas. Tell us about your convictions. UEFA's door is wide open - join us, and I promise you that you will not be disappointed," Platini said."I'm convinced that you will hear this appeal, because it is being made in the sense of history, and with progress at the service of football in mind."

The G14 said earlier this month it hoped to expand by the end of the year and open its doors to clubs across the continent.

Conflict spots for the group include backing Belgian Charleroi in a landmark international injury compensation case that has gone to Europe's highest court. There also is a similar case involving Olympique Lyon is pending.
