Geoff Thompson will stand down as English Football Association chairman effective 31 Jan.
Thompson was due to leave this summer, but he has decided to exit early and clear the way for Lord Triesman, who will be the FA's first independent chair. Triesman gains control 11 March. Thompson, who was elected FA chair in 1999, will remain a vice-president for both FIFA and UEFA.
