Blatter to pitch 6+5 players quota to Platini

FIFA president Sepp Blatter will have a task on his hands in trying to convince UEFA counterpart Michel Platini that quotas are good for the game.

Blatter's meeting comes right after Platini called quotas simply illegal. Blatter has been pushing for a measure that would not totally limit international players on a club, but would limit the number of foreign nationals on the field at one time to five.

Blatter has remained adamant that he will ask the FIFA Congress to back the 6+5 rule at the end of the month. This comes despite little support from European lawmakers and Platini.

"The objectives are very good, and I have said that many times," Platini said. "However, they are completely illegal under EU legislation."

Both the lawmakers and UEFA have said the rule would constitute a restraint of free labour movement. The European Parliament voted against the proposals 8 May. Many lawmakers backed UEFA's 'home-grown player rule', which sets a quota of locally-trained players at clubs, but with no caps on nationality.
