G-14 welcomes yesterday's announcement in Nyon, Switzerland by Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, President of FC Bayern München and Chairman of the European Club Forum and UEFA President Michel Platini regarding the formation of a new, independent European Club Association and the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the European Club Association and UEFA.
The announcement, which also signalled the dissolution of UEFA's European Club Forum, paves the way for the European Club Association to become the sole representative body defending the interests of clubs at European and international level and to be formally recognized by UEFA. It builds on the momentum generated by the meeting of 15 January 2008 in Zurich between a number of clubs and FIFA and UEFA, where all parties present agreed on the necessary steps to correct the imbalance that existed in the governing structures of football and to ensure that clubs are henceforth adequately represented in these structures.
G-14 welcomes the fact that its original initiative to launch a new, independent and fully representative organisation to defend the interests of clubs has now come to fruition as a result of a productive and positive dialogue between the clubs and the governing bodies. G-14 clubs are fully committed to engaging in this initiative and believe that the European Club Association should be the sole independent organisation to represent the clubs. As a sign of their commitment and goodwill, member clubs will take the formal decision to dissolve G-14 and to withdraw its claims in court, at the G-14 General Assembly on 15 February.
