FIFA to restrict the role of agents

FIFA is ready to restrict the role of agents following Lord Stevens' probe into bungs in the English game.

The governing body said limits on agents could be in place by the start of next year. This came after Stevens could not clear 15 agents listed as questionable cases.

"There is no doubt this is a very serious conclusion," FIFA treasurer Matthieu Sprengers said of Stevens' work. "The report will now come to FIFA and we will deal with it."

Sprengers himself conducted a two-year study into agents' dealings and has come forward with a series of guidelines, including a three percent limit on all deals.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter has supported Sprengers' ideas, believing there is too much questionable activity involving agents.

"It's not a good idea for football if the agents are taking too much money out of football and if players' agents are paid by different parties," Blatter said. "Players' agents must be paid by players but over 10 per cent is immoral. Generally what is wrong is that players' agents are also asking for commission from the club. Here we need some discipline."
