MPs back rights for establishing player quotas

Adjust font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
A group of MPs have banded together to back the possibility of quotas on the pitch for football clubs.

The MPs told the European Commission, after it saw no basis in quotas based on European free movement laws, that sport governing bodies should have the right to decide on movements. There should be no outside interference.

Football isn't the only sport with the quota issue, and members of the British government know that. Cricket and rugby are dealing with quota questions. European Court rulings have been opening the gates more and more for foreign players to break through in those sports.

The English Football Association will take a formal position following discussions with its professional game board and the decision-making main board. Chairman, Lord Triesman does want a system that would increase the pool of English players available to the national manager.

The Premier League, obviously, is one body against quotas. The league has many foreign players who operate at star and minor player level.
